Thrust-Lock™ Boltless Restrained Joint

Thrust-Lock™ ductile iron pipe is a flexible positive restrained joint system designed to accommodate internal working pressures of up to 350 psi plus 100 psi surge allowance. Available in sizes 6" through 36", Thrust-Lock™ combines the convenience and ease of push-on joints with the strength and security provided by a restrained joint pipe system designed of sound engineering principles.

Thrust-Lock's™ liberal joint deflection allowances further complement this system to make it one of the most versatile and cost-effective restrained joints on the market.

The Thrust-Lock™ assembly incorporates proven pipe joint sealing systems--TytonŽ gaskets for 6" through 24" and FastiteŽ gaskets for 30" and 36" providing further reason to place confidence in the performane of the Thrust-Lock™ concept.

The availability of a full line of Thrust-lock™ fittings allows for a uniform boltless restrained joint pipeline from the first station to the last. Trust-Lock™ fittings, as with the pipe, are available in ductile iron only and are manufactured in accordance with the AWWA C110 standard.

Thrust-Lock™ Restrained Joint Assembly

Step 1 Ring Installation
A. Put lock ring on the spigot end of the pipe
B. Pry the lock ring over the weldment. Use the hammer to tap the cover.
C. Lock ring installation complete.

Step 2 Clean the Bell and Spigot
A. Thoroughly clean out the bell with special attention to the gasket recess. Remove any foreign material or excess paint.
B. Clean the spigot end and remove any sharp edges.

Step 3 Insert Gasket
A. Insert the gasket into the recess in the bell with the small end of the gasket facing the bell face.

Step 4 Lube the Bell and Spigot
A. Apply lube to the inside surface only of the gasket.
B. Apply a generous coating of lubricant to the spigot end.

Step 5 Insert pipe
Guide the spigot end into the bell and, while maintaining straight alignment, push the pipe into the bell socket.

Step 6 Insert Lock Ring
Push lock ring into the bell.

Step 7 Rotate lock ring
Rotate the lock ring until the lugs align. Use a hammer to tap the ring if required. Install the anti-rotation wedges at 3 and 9 o'clock if the pipe is being used inside of a casing. Deflect the joint if desired.

Thrust-Lock™ Boltless Restrained Joint For Field Cut Pipe

Pacific States has developed a companion joint to the Thrust-Lock™ restrained joint pipe system for instances requiring pipe cuts in the field.

The strength, reliability and joint deflection found in the standard ThrustLock™ joint is matched with the versatility essential for field adjustments. The field-cut version of the Thrust-Lock™ joint utilizes a locking ring with stainless steel serrations welded to its interior in place of the factory weldment found on full length Thrust-Lock™ pieces. The serrations grip the field cut spigot end of the pipe serving to anchor the joint assembly. As with the system featuring a factory weldment, the restraining ring for field-cut Thrust-Lock™ pipe has been designed for internal working pressures of up to 350 psi plus 100 psi surge allowance.

SELECTING AND CUTTING PIPE FOR FIELD ADJUSTMENTS Before field cutting a piece of ductile iron pipe it is important to measure the outside diameter at the point the cut will occur to ensure it falls within accepted tolerances. (See chart). Once a piece has been selected, it can be cut using an abrasive pipe saw, a rotary wheel cutter, a guillotine pipe saw or a milling wheel saw. Cut ends should be carefully ground to remove rough edges and metal spurs which may damage a rubber gasket if not properly eliminated. Bevel the cut end before installing.

Field Cutting Ductile Iron Pipe

When it is necessary to field cut ductile iron pipe, the installer should select a piece of pipe that has been marked for field cutting. All ductile iron pipe has a slight taper due to the manufacturing process. If the pipe is not marked for field cutting then the diameter of the pipe should be checked prior to cutting. This can be done with an OD Tape or by using an MJ follower to check the diameter of the pipe. No pipe should be cut within 24 inches of the bell face.
