SHORT FORM SPECIFICATION:

  1. Scope
1.1 This specification covers the general requirements for Pacific States Ductile Iron Pressure Pipe for conveying water and other liquids.

  2. Conformance
    1. Pipe:
Ductile Iron Pipe, 3" through 36", shall meet the requirements of ANSI/AWWA C151/A21.51 and ANSI/AWWA C150/A21.50.

    2. Joints:
      Rubber-gasket joints shall be Tyton® Joint 3"-24" and Fastite® 30"-36" and meet the requirements of ANSI/AWWA 0111/121.11.

    3. Coating and Lining:
Outside coating shall be an asphaltic coating approximately one mil thick. Pipe shall be cement-mortar lined per ANSI/AWWA C104/A21.4.

Mechanical Joint Assembly

Step 1. A, B, & C. Clean the bell socket and spigot or plain end. Lubricate both the gasket and plain end by brushing with soapy water or an approved pipe lubricant.

Step 2. A & B. Place the gland on the plain end with the lip extension toward the plain end. Place the gasket on the plain end with the narrow edge facing the plain end.

Step 3. Insert the plain end into the bell and press the gasket into the bell recess. Push the gland toward the socket and center it around the pipe with the gland lip against the gasket.

Step 4. A & B. Insert and tighten the bolts. It is important to maintain the same distance between the gland and bell face at all times. This is best done by tightening opposite sets of bolts.

Achieving the recommended bolt torque, particularly with large diameter pipe, may require repeating the process. Recommended bolt torque ranges are as follows:

Torque
Pipe Size (in.) Bolt Size (in.) Range (ft/lb)
3 5/8 45-60
4-12 3/4 75-90

Field Cutting Ductile Iron Pipe

When it is necessary to field cut ductile iron pipe, the installer should select a piece of pipe that has been marked for field cutting. All ductile iron pipe has a slight taper due to the manufacturing process. If the pipe is not marked for field cutting then the diameter of the pipe should be checked prior to cutting. This can be done with an OD Tape or by using an MJ follower to check the diameter of the pipe. No pipe should be cut within 24 inches of the bell face.
